Moissanite and diamond can both make beautiful engagement-ring centre stones, but they are not the same material and they do not look identical. The most useful comparison is not which one is universally ‘better’, but which combination of appearance, origin, price and meaning feels right for you.
What is moissanite?
Moissanite is crystalline silicon carbide. Natural moissanite is extremely rare, so jewellery-quality stones are laboratory created. It is a diamond simulant – an attractive gemstone in its own right, but not a diamond.
Moissanite is durable enough for everyday jewellery and is known for strong fire: the rainbow flashes seen as light disperses through the stone.
Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds
Natural diamonds formed in the Earth and are valued in part for their geological origin and rarity. Laboratory-grown diamonds are created by technology and have essentially the same crystal structure and physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. They must always be clearly described as laboratory-grown.
Both differ from moissanite, which has a different chemical composition and optical character.

Sparkle: Diamond combines white brilliance, fire and scintillation. Moissanite generally shows stronger rainbow fire and may look more colourful in bright light.
Hardness: Diamond is 10 on the Mohs scale; moissanite is about 9.25. Both resist scratching well, although hardness is not the same as resistance to chipping or impact.
Price: Moissanite is generally the least expensive. Laboratory-grown diamonds usually cost less than comparable natural diamonds.
Identification: A reputable jeweller or gemmological laboratory can distinguish the materials. A diamond report should clearly identify whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-grown.
How do they look different?
In smaller stones or casual viewing, the difference may not be obvious to everyone. Under bright lighting and in larger sizes, moissanite’s stronger rainbow flashes and double refraction can give it a distinct look. Diamond tends to show a balance of white light, coloured fire and crisp contrast.
Neither effect is objectively better. View stones in the same shape and lighting and choose the visual character you prefer.
Durability and everyday wear
Both materials are suitable for engagement rings when well set and cared for. Diamond has the greatest scratch resistance. Moissanite is also very hard and does not inherently cloud with age, although any gemstone can look dull when oils, soap and residue collect on its surface. Settings and claws should be inspected periodically regardless of the centre stone.
Price, resale and long-term expectations
Moissanite is usually chosen for appearance and affordability rather than resale. Laboratory-grown diamonds also tend to have lower secondary-market values than natural diamonds, and all resale outcomes vary. Natural diamonds should not be marketed as guaranteed investments: retail price, market demand, condition and selling costs all affect what may be recovered.
Ethics and environmental claims
Origin is only one part of responsible purchasing. Mining, energy source, manufacturing, transport, labour practices and traceability can all affect a product’s footprint. It is not accurate to assume every laboratory-grown diamond or moissanite has a lower environmental impact without evidence about its production.
Ask for specific information about origin, disclosure and available documentation rather than relying on broad terms such as ‘eco-friendly’, ‘sustainable’ or ‘conflict-free’ without substantiation.
Which option is right for you?
Choose moissanite if: you love colourful fire and want a large visual presence at the lowest initial price.
Choose a laboratory-grown diamond if: you want a diamond’s material and optical properties with greater size flexibility at a lower initial price than a comparable natural diamond.
Choose a natural diamond if: geological rarity, natural origin and tradition are central to the meaning of the piece.
