Having been in the industry for over 22 years, it has been interesting to see engagement ring styles change during this time. The thick heavy yellow gold styles of the nineties have made way for today’s finer rings with preferences for white and rose gold. Here are the top 7 engagement ring styles to watch in2017.
Scroll work on the side of the main diamond setting is a subtle way of expressing the uniqueness of your engagement ring. It alludes to the traditional hand-crafting nature of an engagement ring. The idea of a master jeweller filing, bending and working the metal to make it truly unique is much more appealing than a vending machine style ring that is a carbon copy of the rest.
The halo has been increasing in popularity steadily over the years. The cushion cut halo is by far the most popular. With Passion 8, Hearts and Arrows cushion cut diamond, is the brightest cushion cut diamond on the market. The trend in 2017 will see unique takes on halos such a twisted halos and intricately designed halos that feature geometric shapes and unique designs.
With ring finances being a priority for budget savvy brides, the double halo is a great way to turn a half carat diamond into a 1.5ct diamond look. While sacrificing a little of the focus on the central diamond, the amount of bling you get from a double halo is certainly appealing to some.
The classics are making a comeback. 2017 has seen the resurgence of the timeless 6 claw solitaire with brides opting for super fine bands to really accentuate the centre ROCK. Brides have been opting for a more rounded band to give a slimmer appearance.
Different from a full split band, the mini split band is one that starts off as a single band, and features a small split at the end just before the centre stone or halo. It gives the illusion of a little more width without looking chunky and is often diamond set.
For the brides who are looking for the ultimate engagement ring style for 2017, the Pink diamonds are a perfect choice. Mined in Western Australia and uniquely Australian, these diamonds not only look beautiful but are an investment as well, as they are increasing by 20% – 25% every year. You can use them, as side features, in a halo or even just have one in the middle of the band. That way you can take a little piece of Australia wherever you go.
This year we have already seen an increase in the number of the engagement rings with side detail. Side detail can involve anything from hand engraving into the side of your engagement ring, to a side feature diamond.
When I am designing a ring for a bride to be, one of the things I ask them, is if they have a favourite colour. Surprisingly pink is not the most popular colour. Many brides are electing for the colour blue (as in a sapphire) to be used as a side feature. Maybe it is an early precursor to the wedding tradition of including something blue.
The side detail feature of the engagement ring is also a great idea for brides who are looking to incorporate a family heirloom that has been handed down to them from a family member.
