What is 950 platinum?

The “950” mark means the alloy contains 950 parts platinum per thousand, with the balance made up of other alloying metals. The precise alloy should be confirmed for each finished piece. Platinum is denser than gold, so a comparable ring often feels heavier on the hand.

Platinum does not require rhodium plating to remain white. It is not scratch-proof: normal wear displaces metal at the surface and gradually creates a patina. It can be professionally refinished if a brighter polish is preferred.

Platinum compared with gold

Platinum is naturally white and dense. White gold is lighter and is commonly rhodium plated to create a bright white finish. Yellow and rose gold bring warmth and contrast. None is universally superior; cost, weight, colour, allergy history, maintenance and design all matter.

Diamonds and platinum

The white colour of platinum works across diamond shapes and colour grades. Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are both available, subject to current stock and design. The page should state the specific report supplied with the selected diamond instead of presenting all laboratory formats as interchangeable.

Care and maintenance

Use mild soapy water and a soft brush, and remove the ring for heavy impact or abrasive activities. Platinum can scratch and develop patina, but a jeweller can inspect, clean and refinish it. Resizing and repairs should be assessed individually because design, setting and previous work affect what is safe.

A note on metal sensitivity

High-purity platinum alloys are often chosen by people concerned about sensitivity, but “hypoallergenic” should not be presented as a guarantee. Reactions depend on the individual and the complete alloy, not only the headline metal.
