Australia is the only consistent supplier of deep pink diamonds, giving it a unique advantage over the rest of the world.

According to the Australian Financial Review, the Argyle pink diamonds have increased on average by 20% every year for the last five years. The best time to buy an Argyle pink diamond was 10 years ago and the second-best time is NOW!

With the argyle mine closed in 2020, there has been an influx of investors looking to purchase pink diamonds through their personal or self-managed super funds.

Here are 7 mistakes clients make when looking to invest in Pink Diamonds.

  1. The don’t buy an Argyle certified pink diamond

Diamonds can come with an Argyle certificate and/or a GIA certificate. It is preferable that the stone has both however having at least an Argyle certificate certifying its origin is crucial to investing in pinks. Coloured diamonds with just a GIA certificate can come from anywhere in the world and don’t carry the Argyle premium. Also, the Argyle pink diamond grading system is a lot more detailed, where the GIA system can often span 2-3 Argyle pink diamond grades, which makes purchasing a pink diamond more precise when it comes with an Argyle certificate.

The fancy cut pink diamonds are significantly cheaper than the round diamonds. Which means there is a strong allure to purchase a pink diamond that costs less or gives you a larger size. There is a good reason for this price difference, it is because there is less demand for them. Which means that there will be less demand for them when you go sell them. And anyone who has ever sold a property will tell you, you will get the greatest return when you have a lot of people who want to buy it. It could take you significantly longer to sell a fancy cut pink diamond than a round and you may end up getting less for it than you would, had you invested in a round brilliant cut diamond.

You might think that going a deeper pink would be better – the answer is yes, and no. Deeper pinks are great, but you will have to sacrifice too much in the size to get there. Aiming for a mid-pink to purplish pink is ideal to maximise the size and the return of your pink diamond. Ideally aim for a 4/5 P/PP Argyle pink diamond to get the greatest return on your investment.

You will get a bigger pink diamond if you choose an I1 clarity pink diamond, however it is important to know that an I1 clarity diamond has a detracting effect on the value of the stone in the same way that a VS/VVS has an adding affect. However, an eye clean SI diamond will allow you to put more of your budget in to the colour and the size.

Again, like the fancy cuts, the pink rose (formerly known as the brownish pink – great branding change there on Argyle’s part) The pink rose diamonds are cheaper than the straight pinks as they have the brownish hue and do not increase as much in value. So, while you might get a bigger pink diamond it’s increase in value will be less than half of a deep pink diamond. This category is perfect for the person who would like to wear their pink diamond, rather than leaving it in a safe for investment purposes.

Most pink diamonds are cut to retain the colour, which means that they are often deeper cut. The downside to this is that they often don’t sparkle as much, as the cutter was aiming for weight retention and colour rather than aesthetic beauty. Getting a pink diamond that balances the above criteria with cut is like the icing on the cake and will make it much easier to sell in the future.

Having had the privilege of working in the diamond industry for the last 25 years, there is a lot that I have learnt from the thousands of pink diamonds that I have looked at. What I have found over this time is the perfect sweat spot in buying an investment pink diamond, that will yield the greatest return in the future. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen two pink diamonds with the same paperwork and grading, but the diamonds look completely different. Having an expert on your side, will help you know which diamond is the one that is the best in its class, instead of the one the just scrapped in. The latter could cost you thousands of dollars that you will be potentially be leaving on the table.

If you are interested in investing in pinks, the best step is to book a Pink diamond discovery session to find out if this strategy is suited to you.

If 2024 is the year that you and your partner decide to take the plunge and get engaged,  you might be wondering what are the top engagement ring trends between 2024.

Over the last 12 to 18 months engagement ring trends have certainly had a dramatic shift away from the classic halos back to the more traditional solitaire engagement rings.

What is the most popular engagement ring right now?

Choosing an engagement ring is such a deeply personal choice. There are so many factors to consider when choosing the ring that you’re going to wear on your hand for the next 50 to 70 years. For a lot of brides today, it is all about the rock in the middle. So choosing a design that is more classic and traditional really helps to show off the centre diamond. The most popular engagement ring today is a classic solitaire round brilliant cut diamond in a six claw setting on a super fine yellow gold traditional band.

Other than the classic round brilliant, the oval cut diamond is also proving to be a popular choice, as it helps to elongate the finger. Whichever design you choose, try and think about what you will like and the next 20 to 30 years. As well as this make sure you try them on with the matching wedding band to see how they look as a set. You can see some more classic diamond engagement rings here.

Top 3 Engagement ring trends right now

Solitaire engagement rings

Whether you’re looking at a round brilliant cut,  Oval cut diamond,  pear shape cut diamond,  it is hard to go past  a classic solitaire engagement ring when you’re proposing.  With the ever increasing size of diamond engagement rings,  a solitaire design is sure to make your centre stone pop. Many brides are choosing a finer band around the 1.6mm – 1.8mm with a half round profile for comfort.

Trilogy Engagement Rings

In the last 6 months there’s certainly been a rise in trilogy diamond  engagement rings.  Trilogy engagement rings  where the three stones are close in size tend to give a much bigger impact across the finger.  The four claw version will show more of the diamond and help with the overlap of the two shoulder diamonds. Other than the round brilliant cut shoulder diamonds, the pear shaped shoulder diamonds are also a popular choice.

Gold Engagement rings

Yellow gold engagement rings are certainly making a comeback this year.  Brides have certainly been choosing the yellow gold band on their engagement ring over the previously favoured white gold and platinum. Some brides are even choosing to change their traditional white gold claws to yellow gold as well.

When choosing a gold engagement ring,  it’s important to take  your skin tone into account. If you have a warmer,  creamier skin tone,  then a yellow gold engagement ring or be a great choice.

Conclusion

Whether you are looking for a natural mined diamond or a laboratory grown man made diamond engagement ring, all of our designs can  be personalised for you to make sure that your engagement ring is unique.  At Xennox Diamonds,  we don’t charge any extra to have your engagement ring custom made for you.

There’s so much choice out there that sometimes it’s hard to know which metal is best for your dream wedding rings, especially when it comes to choosing for the groom. So to help you out, below is a brief description of some of the more popular metal types with a focus on metal that works really well when it comes to designing your man’s wedding ring.

White, Yellow and Rose Gold

9-Carat Gold: This is probably the most common gold type you will find if you walk into a suburban mass-market jewellery store. The ring will be stamped either ‘9ct’ or ‘375’. Essentially this means that for every 1000 grams of metal, only 375 grams of it are pure gold. The rest is made up of silver, copper and other minor elements.

I would argue that this is not really a gold ring – how can you call something a gold ring when nearly two-thirds of the metal is made up of something else? Sales staff in stores selling these rings may try to tell you 9-carat gold is a better wearing metal compared to its 18-carat counterpart.

However, this is not the case. If you search online to compare the hardness of each using the Vickers hardness test, you will actually see that 18-carat gold is actually a harder metal (with a Vickers score of 230) than 9-carat gold (at 170).

The second important element to take into account is colour. Because a 9-carat ring only has 37.5 percent pure gold, the metal has a more washed out and sometimes coppery colour – which is likely not what you associate the colour of gold to look like.

14-Carat Gold: While this metal type is more commonly seen in countries like America, it is starting to gain popularity in Australia. Seen as a halfway point between 9-carat. and 18-carat gold, 14-carat gold’s formula is 585, which means it has slightly more gold than alloy metal. So while it might not be as great as 18 carats in wearability, it is still a much better option and has a nicer colour than 9 carats.

18-Carat Gold: This is the best wearing metal, particularly if you’re going for a yellow gold band. The metal is much denser than 9-carat gold and has a much nicer colour. Due to its density, it is also about 35 per cent heavier than 9-carat gold, so you will definitely feel the difference when you hold it in your hand.

If you are looking at white gold, the colour differences will not be noticeable because all white gold rings are rhodium plated. However, hardness differences will remain.

Platinum

For a long time, platinum was seen as the ‘Rolls Royce’ standard for wedding bands, prized for its weighty feel, hypoallergenic properties and luxury tag. It has a slightly grey colour and doesn’t have to be rhodium plated.

While platinum is certainly a great metal, however, a few misconceptions need to be cleared up:

Advancements in metallurgy mean new metals are coming on to the market all the time. Platinum 600 is one of the latest, which has been alloyed with tungsten – a very strong and scratch-resistant metal.

Tungsten on its own is not an ideal metal, because it cannot be resized. So if something should happen and you need to change the size, you will have to buy a new ring.

The benefit of alloying tungsten with platinum is that it makes the platinum 20 per cent harder than regular platinum while still allowing it to be resized. A by-product of taking out some of the platinum and adding tungsten is that it is also more affordable.

At the time of writing, Platinum 600 rings are sitting in the range of $1600 to $2200.

Palladium

Palladium belongs to the platinum family of metals and shares a lot of similarities. Firstly it has the same slightly greyer colour, which some guys find appealing – especially if they don’t want to have something too white and shiny.

Secondly, it never has to be rhodium plated. The colour that you see is the colour that it will always be. Thirdly, it is a great wearing metal, which for most guys means low maintenance.

Mokume-gane

Mokume-gane (which translates as ‘burl metal’) is a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns and a great style for the guy who really wants his wedding ring to look unique. The name was borrowed from a type of pattern created in the forging of swords and other edged weapons, which most guys find pretty cool.

First made in 17th-century Japan, the mixed-metal was used only for sword fittings until the Meiji era when the decline in demand for swords forced artisans to create purely decorative items instead.

The traditional components were relatively soft metallic elements and alloys (such as gold, copper and silver), which would become fused with one another without completely melting. The different coloured metals are used to create amazing patterns that can sometimes look like wood grain or fingerprints.

Mokume-gane rings are always unique – while the metal mix and patterns may be similar, no two rings are exactly the same.

There are many decisions you need to make when you are about to get married and we can help make everything run smoothly.

One decision you might not be thinking about at the moment is about protecting that investment for the future.

Now, I know you already have a million things going on and you are excited about the wedding day but the last piece of advice I’d like to give you is about getting your rings insured just in case something happens.

Maybe you think it’s something that can wait until after the big day. However, you should really think about taking out insurance straight away. An engagement ring and your wedding rings are a major financial investment and without being too pessimistic, anything can happen.

But choosing the right insurance policy to cover the rings is the most important thing. Insuring your ring under your basic house insurance is not going to be good enough.

Let me ask you this: would you insure your car with a boat insurance company?

Well, insuring your ring under household contents insurance is essentially the same thing. Household contents insurance, as the name suggests, is specifically tailored to the contents that normally reside inside the house. The wording of the policy rarely takes into account the complexity and difficulty of insuring jewellery.

The reason jewellery is so hard to insure is that a ring can be melted down, stones taken out and reused in a number of other rings. If you want the best insurance cover and peace of mind, it is best to insure with a company that is specially designed to insure jewellery and only jewellery.

These types of policy are written by a jeweller, especially for you, the wearer and means your ring is not lumped together with car or house insurance items. It also guarantees your jeweller will be the one who will take care of you if the worst happens.

It is widely known that insurers don’t understand jewellery; they have little to no respect for the bond between you and your jeweller. However, insuring with a certified jewellery insurance company is about securing and building on to that bond, to make sure that the items you hold dear are well and truly protected.

An engagement ring engraving is an expression of love inside one of life’s most treasured possessions. Choosing an engagement ring engraving can sometimes take months, as after all, it is a piece you are going to wear for the rest of your life. Once you have chosen your dream ring, the first piece of the puzzle is complete. The second piece of the puzzle is the proposal. An unforgettable proposal is something that inspires romance and is retold for years to come. After the initial excitement of the moment and seeing the engagement ring for the first time, your eyes look to the engraving on the inside of the ring. This engagement ring engraving is what will make your engagement ring so personal and special to you alone.

What to engrave in your engagement ring?

Think of a special phrase or word that you use for each other. Sometimes the phrase can be in English, sometimes another language or even characters from a picture alphabet. Or perhaps there is a location that is special to you, where you first met or proposed. Ideally, it should be short enough to see without turning the ring. Adding a date or each other’s initials is a common addition to mark the occasion however there are so many other creative options. engagement ring engravingAdditional touches If you are looking to add a unique touch to the engraving inside your engagement ring, adding a diamond into either the words or the date is a nice touch. The stone you put into the engraving can be a diamond, ruby, emerald, sapphire or even a pink diamond. The letter O, in the words such as love and hope are perfect to put a diamond in. Likewise choosing to substitute a diamond for the number 0 in dates will add a little sparkle to your message.

Some of the popular engagement ring engraving

• I Love you • you are my everything • my soul mate • my love always Some of the most unusual engraving messages • Shnookums • little spoon & big spoon • one ring to rule them all (yes this happened!) • If lost please return to…. (hasn’t happened yet, but maybe not a bad idea if your partner is a little forgetful

Who should do the engagement ring engraving?

Master engagement ring engravingWhile some jewellers can do engraving, a master hand engraver is your best option to make sure the engraving is as clear as possible. Especially in a lady’s engagement ring band, where it can be quite narrow in width. After a Master Engraver has engraved the ring, the engagement ring should always be polished to remove any rough edges.

Where to put the engagement ring engraving?

The best place to read the engraving would of course, be at the bottom of the ring. However, this is not the best place to have it as this is often where the join in the engagement ring is. If your engagement ring ever needs to be resized they will most likely need to cut through the engraving. I always recommend putting the engraving on the side of the engagement ring that way it will never be disturbed.

How much should engraving cost?

Engraving can vary depending on the standard of engraving. A Mister Minit, found in all local shopping centres may only charge a few dollars per letter, whereas done by a Master Engraver, it can be around $9 per letter. As mentioned above though, this will include having the jeweller polish and finish off the engraving inside the ring. If you are having initials, this usually costs a little more around the $15 – $20 per letter. Spending that little extra and getting a professional to do the engraving is worth it. I know when I look at the engraving on the inside of my wedding ring, which is quite often, I am always happy with the craftsmanship of the engraver.
